How to fit BIM and fit out together

first_imgBIM4FitOut was established in 2013 by FIS, the trade organisation representing the finishes and interiors sector, in response to the question “what will be the impact of BIM on the fit out sector?” A question the group is still trying to answer. What BIM4FitOut has done is establish a clear strategy for helping FIS members adapt to the requirements of BIM on fit out projects.BIM is a manifestation of the digitisation of the industry. We are not sure exactly how this will affect the way projects are managed but this is a revolution and it is better to take part in a revolution than have one done to you.BIM is a manifestation of the digitisation of the industry, we are not sure exactly how this will affect the way projects are managed but this is a revolution and it is better to take part in a revolution than have one done to youSo we should aim to help shape the way BIM is used rather than let others do it for us and then complain that we don’t like it.With this in mind, the group is currently developing and promoting three tools for the supply chain. First, a new workbook and toolkit to allow contractors to get started with BIM. This will be launched at May Design Series on 19 May.The second is BID4Free, a free to use BIM model reader that will be designed to allow tenders to be returned using a model and crucially without adding to the cost of returning a tender. This project is sponsored by Innovate UK and is run in collaboration with 3DRepo (the software provider) and Balfour Beatty. The final strand, in partnership with CIBSE, BIM4M2 and RIBA NBS, is the development of product data templates for inclusion in the digital plan of works. Product data templates allow manufacturers to structure data, which is a requirement of Level 2 BIM, including performance, sustainability and operational information. This in turn allows building operators to understand how to maintain their buildings and the performance of products such as fire rated doors and partitions.BIM4FitOut has committed to coordinating the production of all product data templates for interiors, starting with ceilings, partitions, access floors and operable walls. It is clear that BIM is still an emerging process and although there is evidence of its adoption, there are many SMEs and micro organisations still contemplating their first steps on the journey to working in this digital world.David Frise, chief executive, FIS BIM4FitOut will be launching its BIM tool at the May Design Series show, on 19 May, at ExCeL, London. Grassworks president calls for continued funding

first_imgDave Johnson, president of the membership organization GrassWorks, recently sent letters to every Wisconsin legislator, calling on them to restore $400,000 per year in funding for grazing specialists and networks. He urges graziers to ask their state senator and assembly representative to back legislation to place funding for the Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI) in the upcoming biennial budget. Johnson is concerned because the budget submitted by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) to Governor Walker doesn’t include money for grazing specialists.Johnson calls managed grazing “the bright spot” of the past few years, when Wisconsin struggled to provide jobs and economic development in rural communities.advertisementadvertisementHe points out that 22 percent of Wisconsin dairy farmers use managed grazing and that approximately half of beginning dairy producers are graziers. The grazing networks and technical service providers supported through the GLCI provided peer-to-peer education for 10,140 farmers in 2012. Honda CB4X Concept one step closer to production

first_imgJapanese motoring giant, Honda, pulled out all the stops last year at EICMA when they unveiled several highly notable motorcycles including the Honda CB4X Concept, a four-cylinder sport-touring beauty. Now, new patents have emerged which got us wondering if Honda is serious about bringing it into production.Applied at the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the new Honda CB4X Concept patents are said to be based on Honda’s 650cc platform which in our opinion would make a very interesting middleweight sports-tourer (and replacement for their current offering, the two-cylinder Honda CB500X).Looking at the new patents, it seems like Honda is keeping the overall aesthetics similar to the original Honda CB4X Concept from its sharp yet simplistic exterior design right down to the wheels and double-barrel side exhaust. The Honda CB4X Concept patent designs are said to come out of their R&D facility in Rome, Italy. We’re probably guessing that the European market is very interested in this Honda four-cylinder middleweight sport-touring prospect, which also means that getting it into production might be a reality after all.If it does, you can be sure that the production version of the CB4X will make its debut at the end of the year during one of the big motorcycle shows like EICMA (hopefully). Keep in mind that history has showcased a lot of concept reveals and patents but still very few made it to the production line. We sure hope that this one does.New Middleweight 800cc Honda Africa Twin in the Works?–Ads–last_img read more

World’s tallest observation wheel falls short on riders

first_imgLAS VEGAS | The world’s tallest observation wheel hasn’t quite reached the elevated expectations of its owner.Caesars Entertainment officials have said the High Roller — its towering Las Vegas Strip attraction that stands 550 feet tall — was just shy of 5,000 daily riders in the past three months, up 10 percent compared to the prior quarter. That’s at least 3,000 riders shy of company expectations before the ride opened nearly a year ago though.FILE – In this March 31, 2014 file photo, the Las Vegas High Roller at The LINQ begins to operate in Las Vegas. The High Roller observation wheel towering behind the Las Vegas Strip may be hard to miss but apparently plenty of the destination’s more than 41 million visitors have taken a pass on taking a spin. (AP Photo/David Becker, file)The ride posted the shortfall despite deep discounts for locals on the regular $29.95 to $59.95 ticket prices, Groupon deals and airline travel package discounts. The attraction isn’t hard to miss as it towers behind the Las Vegas Strip, which sees 41 million visitors a year.So how does Caesars Entertainment get already over-stimulated visitors to Vegas to come on board?Offering them drinks from an open bar during the 30-minute ride has helped. Riders booking the “Happy Half Hour” package have accounted for one of four riders, said Tariq Shaukat, the company’s chief commercial officer. The wheel is the first of a few observation wheels proposed for the Strip. It opened last year as part of a $550 million pedestrian promenade sandwiched between the Flamingo hotel and casino and the former Imperial Palace casino-hotel, now called the Linq.Caesars Entertainment hasn’t provided an individual cost to build and operate the wheel. No one expected the ride to be a constant sell-out. If the High Roller packed every last one of its orb-shaped cabins for each of its 29 daily revolutions, though, it could accommodate a total of 32,480 people. The company had its sights set on 8,000 to 11,000 visitors a day, which might earn it as much as $60 million annually, according to a financial filing from 2013.The company arrived at those numbers in part by comparing its ride to 2010 figures for other observation attractions. The London Eye got 3.9 million visitors; the Empire State Building had 3.5 million; and 700,000 visitors went to the top of the Stratosphere in Vegas.Shaukat said the High Roller was impacted when the company decided to overhaul the newly re-branded Linq hotel-casino next door, putting some 1,200 rooms out of service and cutting down on possible riders.Marketing the ride has also been a challenge for the company that has traditionally focused on casinos, hotels and other types of entertainment. It assumed the High Roller would be most popular when hotels on the Strip were the fullest, but that hasn’t been the case. The main riders so far have been leisure tourists, families and locals — not casino-goers or convention attendees. The week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve — generally a slow one for Las Vegas — was a winner for the ride, he said.“The wheel was on fire because it was exactly the right type of occupancy,” Shaukat said.Reviews on Yelp.com and elsewhere have been largely positive but there’s a catch: They say it’s worth doing once. More than once? Not so much, or at least not without a coupon.Shaukat said changes are in the works to keep the experience fresh. He reminded would-be riders that a trip at night has a different view than during the light of day.last_img read more

On guard: US team locking down on defense for Rio gold

(AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — “Go get him!” From the opening tip to the final horn in the 119-62 blowout, Thibodeau, a hard-driving, hoops lifer who prides himself on teaching the old-school way, screamed instructions at the American players. They have quickly learned that their Team USA assistant coach — and the new head man with the Minnesota Timberwolves — is demanding when it comes to defense. “I’m used to Thibs, man,” U.S. center Demarcus Cousins said with a laugh. “That’s Thibs in walkthrough, so we’re used to it.”And the rest of the world better get used to this U.S. team playing lock-down defense. Armed with unmatched offensive firepower, the Americans, seeking their third straight gold medal, are creating an identity with their backs to the basket.“We get after it on that side of the ball,” said forward Draymond Green. They got after China from the outset. Warriors forward Klay Thompson, one of the game’s elite perimeter defenders, made a steal on China’s first possession and the U.S. finished with 15 steals, forced 24 turnovers and held China to 30 percent shooting. With another roster of NBA stars, there is a continuous red-white-and-blue wave of players flooding in from coach Mike Krzyzewski’s bench. When the U.S. starters needed a break against China, Krzyzewski sent in a fresh group and Thibodeau made sure they knew what they were doing defensively from the moment they stepped on the floor. From his seat next to Coach K’s, Thibodeau pointed like a traffic cop at a busy intersection, and of course, made certain his demands were heard.“Thibs is going to lose his voice by the time this is over with,” four-time Olympian Carmelo Anthony said. “I think everybody in the world can hear Thibs on the sideline. This is what he lives for, and the chance to mesh a group this talented to play team defense is as good as it gets. And it’s already apparent that Thibodeau’s message has gotten across as the U.S. players, some of whom are not exactly known for their defensive skills, are being more vocal on the floor. During the win over China, the Americans were calling out screens, switching and looking to help each other whenever possible. They’ve clearly bought in.During the first quarter against China, Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving poked the ball away before diving headfirst on the floor trying to come up with the steal. As he laid face down, Thibodeau clapped in approval.Floor burns are a badge of honor to Thibodeau, who feels the U.S. team is embracing his principles.“The strength is our versatility,” he said. “We have 12 guys who play hard and play for each other and they are committed to doing that. It started the first day and there’s no let up so when we go to our bench there’s is no drop off. Every one of these guys is a great player and is s starter, so when we sub that pressure is going to remain and we’re going to keep coming for 40 minutes.”Kevin Durant, who along with Anthony is the only returning player from the 2012 London team, said he and his teammates know that when the shots aren’t falling, they can always fall back on their defense.“Defensively, we’re pretty good,” he said. “When we put Draymond out there and just start switching everything, that makes us even better and then we got two guys that are different rim protectors in Marcus, who takes charges and covers the paint, and DJ (DeAndre Jordan) who blocks shots at the rim. We just got every area covered. And we got long defenders on the wing and great point guards that use their hands, so we got to continue to lean on that.”Thibodeau will make sure of it.,Tom Thibodeau’s booming, baritone voice knifed through the air inside sold out Carioca Arena on Saturday as the U.S. team dropped back to play defense early in its Olympic tournament opener against China.“Stay home!” he barked. “Back, back!” ”Get up!” ”By yourself!”Thibodeau didn’t stop, and his commands could even be heard by fans sitting in top rows of the upper deck. John McCain mourned by Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona sports community

first_imgHe had a strong connection to Larry Fitzgerald and the Arizona Cardinals. McCain attended Cardinals games and made an appearance at training camp before the 2017 season. Fitzgerald became friends with the senator, penning a tribute to him last Christmas and visiting him this year.“Arizona, the United States and the rest of the world will not be the same without the voice of Senator John McCain,” Cardinals President Michael Bidwill said. “We are heartbroken by his passing, but know that the character, courage and conviction that he demonstrated throughout his life will endure forever.” In this Aug. 24, 2008, file photo, Republican presidential candidate, Sen. (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin) McCain also attended Phoenix Suns games, even donning an orange shirt with wife Cindy to join the rest of the fans. He also narrated the video for the Suns’ 50-year anniversary.“John McCain was an American hero, an American icon and a friend,” the Suns said. “As we collectively mourn his passing, we also celebrate his unparalleled leadership and dedication to service. Additionally, his courage, perseverance and ability to overcome adversity, in every aspect of his life, will continue to inspire us all.”McCain also was a supporter of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, Arizona State and University of Arizona athletics.___More AP sports: https://apnews.com/tag/apf-sports and https://twitter.com/AP_Sportscenter_img He was a huge Arizona Diamondbacks fan, attending the expansion draft in 1997 and the World Series in 2001, when his team took down the mighty New York Yankees. McCain even attended spring training workouts.Diamondbacks fans gave a standing ovation when McCain’s image was shown on the video board Saturday night during the team’s game against the Seattle Mariners.“John McCain has always been a member of the D-backs’ family and was one of this team’s biggest fans since day one,” Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall said. “He was in attendance at the expansion draft, the World Series and countless other games, remaining a fan through thick and thin. I am honored to consider him a friend and we will miss seeing his smiling face in the stands and our heartfelt thoughts go out to his entire family.”McCain was an avid supporter of the Arizona Coyotes and worked to keep the hockey team in the Valley after the former owner filed for bankruptcy. The Coyotes honored McCain with a bobblehead at a military appreciation night in 2011 and the senator dropped the ceremonial first puck before the game against the Montreal Canadiens.“The entire Coyotes organization is deeply saddened by the passing of Senator John McCain,” the team said. “Senator McCain was a great American hero and patriot who dedicated his life and career to public service. Senator McCain was a maverick who fought for what he believed in and represented the very best ideals of the United States senate. He was a courageous leader who served Arizona and the United States with pride.” PHOENIX (AP) — The sight of John McCain sitting in the stands at Chase Field became so commonplace few people seemed to even notice. The senator from Arizona would get handshakes and take pictures with fans, but he was there just to be one of them, cheering on the home team.last_img read more
