Residents call state bluff on tablet technology

Naturally, this has raised suspicions that the tablet may actually be a foreign product outfitted for the North Korean market, Daily NK has learned. Released last year by the company Pyongje, “Myohyang”–which comes preset with Mt. Paektu’s Lake Cheonji as the background image– houses applications allowing users to read and archive pieces online [the intranet] from state mouthpieces including Rodong Sinmun and Uriminzokkiri, and a camera that can also record video. However, according to a source in North Pyongan Province, “it’s inconceivable that a product made in the North would not mark the Day of the Sun [Kim Il Sung’s birthday] nor the Day of the Shining Star [Kim Jong Il’s birthday].” This news was corroborated by additional sources in South Pyongan Province and Pyongyang. Moreover, most of the tablet’s applications appear in Chinese, including the calendar, which features Chinese characters instead of the usual English or Korean.“Everyone points out that it’s hard to understand why Chinese characters would be used for a domestic product,” she said.  “Unless [the state] is just to try to make things deliberately harder for people for some reason, the simplest explanation is the most rational: the North doesn’t have the technology to override and alter the [Chinese] programs.”“But most people think the missing holiday on the calendar is just an oversight because adding it in couldn’t have been that complex,” she added. Likewise, the Korean language dictionary function on the tablet contains an entry for the “Day of the Sun,” lending further weight to the mistake theory and prompting sardonic university students to call it “a sign that the most powerful propaganda machine in the world is losing its edge.”Irrespective of its origins and limitations, the dictionary is one of the most popular features of the tablet. The application boasts a cache of over 120,000 words, available in seconds at the user’s convenience, unlike the unwieldy, outdated, and rarely consulted bound version. The Grand People’s Study House (central library in Pyongyang) and Kim Il Sung University websites are also said to be popular resources for research purposes, according to the source.“Quite a number of curious college students are using the tool to look up terms like human rights, market economy, succession, Seoul, Pyongyang [no entry, see photo below], and historic incidents to compare the state-sanctioned definition [and their connotation in state media] with the situation on the ground,” she said, adding that some are even bold enough to use memory sticks to secretly read illegal foreign books on their new devices. News “Myohyang’s” Korean dictionary lacks an entry for the  North Korean capital, Pyongyang; however, the South Korean capital, Seoul, has an entry.  When Pyongyang is entered, into the search function, the first result to appear is “Pyongyang Naengmyun (cold noodles)”last_img read more

Exelon Will Buy, Keep Open FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant

first_imgUtilities, scientists, environmentalists and industry and labor groups commented for the proposed standard that would value nuclear’s carbon-free generation attributes and help support financially-struggling plants in the state. The standard would also give incentives to renewable energy and distributed energy projects. Exelon Will Buy, Keep Open FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant A total of 950 external contractors are involved in Loviisa’s annual outage and ongoing modernization projects. There are approximately 500 Fortum employees and some 100 permanent contractors working at Loviisa. In Britain, speculation grew about the project’s future after the British government announced it will take time -at least until early autumn- to consider the details of the project. July 29 Entergy announced in 2015 that it would shut down the single-unit, 838-MW FitzPatrick plant by January 2017 due to the plant losing money. New York regulators and officials worked on plans to save the plant, but Entergy said it was too little, too late. In July, Entergy and Exelon began talks of selling the plant in order to keep it operating. Linkedin August 9 “This incident did not involve employee contamination or a nuclear criticality, but it shows the need for Westinghouse management to review some aspects of their operation,” said NRC Region II Administrator Cathy Haney. “Our inspection will evaluate these issues thoroughly and ensure they are being properly addressed.” The FitzPatrick nuclear power plant in New York avoids closure as Exelon Generation (NYSE: EXC) said it will assume ownership of the plant from Entergy (NYSE: ETR). Three major French unions said in a statement Friday “we know the success conditions are not all met” for the Hinkley Point power plant project. They have taken legal action against EDF’s management to repeal the decision and delay the project. The court decision is expected on Sept. 22. The agency pointed to the recent agreement between Canada, Mexico and the U.S. to produce half of their power supplies from low-carbon resources by 2025. August 8 Linkedin SYLVIE CORBET The British GMB union immediately denounced it as “unnecessary hesitation” putting 25,000 new jobs at risk. “It is a gross error of judgment and must be reversed,” GMB national secretary for energy Justin Bowden said. Exelon agreed it would move forward with a scheduled refueling outage in January, and regulators passed the state’s Clean Energy Standard in August. Exelon said if the standard was passed, it would reinvest millions into its upstate nuclear plants, including approximately $400-$500 million in operations, integration and refueling expenditures in spring of 2017. The utility also said it did not expect any changes to staffing levels at the plant, which normally staffs around 600 people. Exelon operates two other nuclear plants in upstate New York: Ginna and Nine Mile Point. Nine Mile Point is adjacent to FitzPatrick. Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) submitted the application to build and operate the reactors on Dec. 12, 2007. The NRC certified the 1,100-MW AP1000 design in 2012. Optimizing Plant Performance: The April POWERGEN+ series activates today If the U.S. Clean Power Plan (CPP) survives in court, power produced with renewable and nuclear resources in North America will grow from 38 percent in 2015 to 45 percent in 2025, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. 8.19.2016 French unions say the 24-billion-euro ($27 billion) project, which the EDF board approved late Thursday, is far too high and could go over-budget. The French government, which pushed for the project and owns a majority stake in EDF, didn’t comment on the company’s decision. KHNP and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corp. (ENEC) signed an operating supports services agreement where KHNP will supply main control room operators and local operators to support ENEC’s operating unit, Nawah Energy Co. KHNP is supplying four APR-1400 nuclear reactors for the project, slated to begin operations in 2020. Entergy (NYSE: ETR) announced it would shut down the FitzPatrick nuclear plant in upstate New York by 2017, and Exelon (NYSE: EXC) threatened to shut down the Nine Mile Point and Ginna nuclear plants if the standard was not passed. Exelon is in talks with Entergy to potentially buy FitzPatrick and keep it operating. PARIS (AP) – A major nuclear power project in Britain is facing more hurdles as the government announced an unexpected delay and unions at EDF, the French energy firm that will build the plant, argued it would be so expensive as to put the company itself at risk. The New York State Public Service Commission (NYPSC) approved the Clean Energy Standard designed to boost renewables and nuclear power in the state. August 2 August 5 August 2 “I would like specifically to thank our employees who have continued to operate this plant safely and reliably, despite the uncertainty they have faced about a potential shutdown,” said Entergy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Leo Denault. “The pending sale of FitzPatrick is in the best interests of all of our stakeholders: employees, owners, customers and communities, including New Yorkers who will benefit from the plant’s continued clean, safe and reliable energy production.” Amec Foster Wheeler will continue to provide environmental support to NuGeneration Limited (NuGen) for a planned 3.8-GW (gross) nuclear power plant at Moorside, Cumbria. EDF CEO Jean-Bernard Lévy claimed he was caught off-guard by May’s decision, but Reuters reports he was informed on July 21 about the decision to delay and again on July 27 before the board meeting. In emails allegedly sent to Reuters, Lévy said the French government on July 21 had “warned us that in light of her very recent arrival, the new British prime minister has asked for ‘a few days’ before deciding on the project.” The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff completed its final safety evaluation report for combined licenses for two planned reactors at the William States Lee site in South Carolina. July 25 Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) agreed to send additional nuclear plant personnel to the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant project in the United Arab Emirates. NRC Inspection Team Headed to Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel Plant August 2 Similar projects currently under construction in France and Finland are years behind schedule and face billions of dollars in cost overruns. August 3 At Loviisa 1, reheaters and safety valves in the initial steam line will be replaced. At Unit 2, the generator’s rotor will be replaced and major overhaul of stator conducted. One quarter of the fuel will be replaced. In addition to normal periodic maintenance tasks and refueling, the most significant work on both units this year is the modernization of high-pressure turbines and replacement of main transformer and generator breaker. Indian Point nuclear plant was initially not included in the standard because there was a provision that required plants to be fully licensed. Indian Point’s license expired, but the plant can continue operating under a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission provision that allows operation so long as the license renewal process is underway. Governor Andrew Cuomo has vehemently been against relicensing Indian Point due to its close proximity to New York City. However, that provision, along with another that required plants to prove they are struggling, were both removed. DOE extended the management and operating contract for an additional 22 months. The contract is currently being executed by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions LLC. (SRNS), a Fluor-led partnership, together with SN3 Stoller Newport News Nuclear and Honeywell. Loviisa Nuclear Plant Refueling and Maintenance Outage Begins Facebook Associated Press Amec Foster Wheeler’s environmental and radiological experts utilize experience in areas such as hydrology, ecology, hydrogeology, radiological assessment, air quality and noise and vibration. The team has helped assess impacts of proposed nuclear builds at Hinkley Point, Sizewell, Wylfa and Moorside. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is sending an augmented inspection team (AIT) to the Westinghouse nuclear fuel fabrication plant in South Carolina to look into an accumulation of an excessive amount of uranium-bearing material. NYPSC Approves Clean Energy Standard The Unit 1 outage is set to begin August 7, followed by servicing of Unit 2. Unit 1 will undergo the extensive inspection outage performed every four years and Unit 2 is scheduled for a so-called short refueling outage. The entire outage procedure is estimated to be finished in eight weeks. Amec Foster Wheeler Continues Environmental Assessment for NuGen Nuclear Project Commissioners stated their majority vote centered around three main points: grid reliability, keeping carbon emissions low and maintaining jobs. The standard would allow tradable credits for nuclear, solar and wind utilities estimated to be worth $965 million in the first two years. The state set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent and generate half of the state’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030. “This is not an anti-gas movement, but one that recognizes the importance of fuel diversity as an integral part of a utility system,” said NYPSC Chair Audrey Zibelman. “We believe the actions we are taking today we can all be proud of.” Facebook Twittercenter_img Fortum will soon start the annual refueling and maintenance outage at its Loviisa nuclear plant in Finland. Commissioner Gregg Sayre said he lives within 15 miles of Ginna nuclear plant and that the plant has been a “good neighbor.” He went on to say there are no plans to keep the standard around forever, but that the thousands of lost megawatts of nuclear generation cannot be replaced by renewables. SRNS was first awarded the maintenance and operating contract in January 2008 after an open and competitive bidding process. The Savannah River Site supports and maintains the nuclear weapons stockpile as well as processing and storing nuclear materials in support of U.S. nuclear non-proliferation efforts. The two reactors could ultimately produce 7 percent of British electricity, according to EDF. CGN said in a statement it “respects” the British government’s “need to familiarize itself with a project as important to the UK’s future energy security”. RELATED ARTICLESMORE FROM AUTHOR Commissioner Diane Burman spoke of the blackouts in 1977 and 2003 and the fear of the unknown during the events. As part of the $110 million agreement, Entergy will transfer FitzPatrick’s operating license to Exelon. The New York Power Authority agreed to transfer the decommissioning trust fund and liability for the plant to Entergy. Once regulatory approvals are obtained and the deal is finalized, Entergy will then transfer the fund and associated liability to Exelon. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2017 pending approvals from state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the New York State Public Service Commission. The Confederation of British Industry welcomed EDF’s green light. Josh Hardie, the business lobby’s deputy director-general, stressed that “action is needed on key infrastructure projects” such as Hinkley Point. NuclearReactors “As always, Fluor succeeds in the nuclear space through its continued focus on safety and security by modeling excellence and delivering results across all elements of the SRNS organization,” said Bruce Stanski, president of Fluor’s Government Group. “It is also a validation of our employees’ good work to make the world safer and the assurance that DOE has in our ability to successfully accomplish the project’s mission.” During the same period, coal-fired generation will drop 13 percent while the share of power produced with natural gas rises 4 percent, EIA said. Twitter EDF’s board voted July 28 to push forward with the $24 billion, 3.2-GW project. Hours later, Britain’s new prime minister, Theresa May, delayed the project until the government had more time to review the contract and said it would make a decision in early autumn. UK Nuclear Power Project Faces new Delays, Hurdles The projection assumes implementation of the CPP, which was placed on hold by the U.S. Supreme Court, will begin in 2022. EDF then had to cancel a contract signing ceremony planned for July 29 with UK officials and China, according to DigitalLook. China General Nuclear bought a 33 percent stake in the Hinkley Point C project. Mexico accounted for 6 percent of total generation produced in North America in 2015. Canada accounted for 13 percent while U.S. generation represented 80 percent of all power produced in North America last year. KHNP to Supply Experts for UAE Nuclear Plant Project “The extension of certain tax credits, significant cost reductions, and recognition of future CPP requirements result in a large increase in renewable generation between 2015 and 2025,” EIA said Tuesday. “The NuGen and Amec Foster Wheeler partnership has worked successfully over a number of years and NuGen is pleased to continue this partnership as the environmental impact assessment and operation permits are prepared ahead of delivery in early 2017,” said Paula Madill, NuGen’s Head of Environment. EDF faces harsh criticism over the cost of the project, with some observers saying the company might not be solid enough to face the investment effort. French unions also pointed out “technical uncertainties” as the British project is based on a new technology called EPR, which has yet to go online anywhere in the world. August 5 An air scrubber, which removes unwanted material from a number of processes at the plant, was undergoing annual inspection and cleanout when an unexpectedly large amount of material was found inside the scrubber. Further analysis showed the materials had uranium levels in that area that were higher than allowed under NRC requirements. The NRC said there were no safety-related consequences as a result of the accumulation, but the potential for such consequences may have existed. The six-member AIT will review the circumstances, identify the cause or causes and ensure that Westinghouse took appropriate corrective actions. They are expected to spend several days at the facility before continuing an in-office review of the findings. An inspection report will be issued within 30 days of completion of the inspection. New Jersey utility regulators extend zero-carbon breaks for PSEG nuclear power plants Construction of the four reactors is more than 66 percent complete. “Saving FitzPatrick is an enormous win for Central New York and the entire state, preserving hundreds of jobs and maintaining a reliable, carbon-free power source for New Yorkers,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said. “FitzPatrick’s continued operation is essential both to the regional economy and our nation-leading efforts to power the state with 50 percent renewable energy by 2030.” About 80 percent of Canada’s power already comes from low-carbon resources, primarily due to the nation’s vast supply of hydropower capacity. Canada will be adding more wind and solar capacity as it gradually phases out all coal-fired generation. However, the nation’s nuclear capacity is expected to decline with retirements and its use of gas-fired generation is expected to rise. “These are sharp reminders of the need for a reliable and resilient grid,” Burman said. She did say she understood the “concerns and passions of those who oppose nuclear power,” but also noted that many of the public comments from those against it were from people who did not live near plant sites. The French company is to build the plant in conjunction with Chinese state-owned company CGN, which takes one third of the cost of construction. “We are entering a crucial phase in the development of the Barakah plant and we are looking forward to working with the experts from KHNP to ensure the operational readiness of the Barakah plant,” said ENEC CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi. By chloecox – As part of the agreement, an estimated 400 KHNP experts will support operations at Barakah every year until 2030. The workers must pass regulatory exams to be licensed to operate and manage the APR-1400 reactors in the UAE under regulations of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) extended the current contract with Fluor Corp. (NYSE: FLR) at the Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina. Proposed Duke Energy Nuclear Reactors Pass Safety Evaluation August 1 EDF’s CEO reportedly knew the UK government wanted to review the Hinkley Point C nuclear contract days before the company’s board voted to move on with the project, according to Reuters. The NRC’s Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards provided the results of its independent review to the commission in Dec. 14, 2015. The NRC completed its environmental review and issued the final impact statement in December 2013. A mandatory hearing on the application is expected to take place later this year. Following the hearing, the commission will vote on whether to authorize staff to issue the licenses. The company will undertake modeling and assessment work so NuGen can submit an environmental impact assessment in support of a Development Consent Order application and environmental permit applications in 2017. This builds on the company’s successful delivery of the initial phases of the environmental impact assessment program, site characterization, two major consultation stages and initial work on the site’s environmental permits.last_img read more

first_imgSaudi Arabia reports new MERS case; 61 in Korea quarantinedFor the fourth day in a row Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health (MOH) has reported a MERS-CoV infection in a foreign woman in her 20s in Riyadh who is not a healthcare worker, while South Korea has quarantined 61 people after a man tested positive for the virus days after he had recovered from the disease.Today’s MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus) case in Riyadh involves a 23-year-old woman hospitalized in stable condition, the MOH reported today. She is listed as a contact of a previous MERS case. The previous cases were in two 26-year-old women and a 27-year-old woman, one of whom was also a contact of a previous case. The new cases bring the country’s MERS total since 2012 to 1,255 cases, 539 of which have been fatal.Oct 13 Saudi MOH statementSouth Korea’s Health Ministry, meanwhile, has quarantined 61 close contacts of the 35-year-old man in Seoul whose relapse was announced yesterday, The Korea Herald reported today. The group includes family members, hospital patients and their guardians, and health professionals. Medical professionals and government officials said the chance of contacts contracting the disease is “very low,” the story said.”It seems like a very small amount of the virus particles that had been incubating inside the patient’s body has been detected,” said Kim Ik-joong, MD, from the Seoul National University Hospital. In other MERS news, World Health Organization spokesman Gregory Hartl tweeted today that a Saudi man in the Philippines who recently died of a suspected MERS-CoV infection tested negative for the disease.Oct 13 Korea Herald story Gregory Hartl’s Twitter feed Study shows stick puncture may spur Listeria in caramel applesA study in mBio today that was spurred by a 2014 outbreak of listeriosis in caramel apples found that the act of puncturing the apple with a dipping stick produces conditions favorable for growing Listeria monocytogenes, especially at room temperature.University of Wisconsin researchers swabbed four outbreak L monocytogenes strains onto Granny Smith apples, inserted wooden dipping sticks through half the apples, then dipped them all in hot caramel and allowed them to cool. They then stored the apples at either 25°C (77°F) or 7°C (44.6°F) for up to 4 weeks. The team found Listeria increased 1,000-fold on caramel apples with sticks stored at room temperature for 3 days, but Listeria growth was delayed on apples without sticks at the same temperature. Refrigeration substantially slowed the growth of the bacteria, but refrigerated apples with sticks had some growth after 1 week that continued for the next 3 weeks, while those without stick had no Listeria growth in the 4 weeks of cold storage.Dipping the apples in hot caramel killed off much of the surface bacteria, said lead author Kathleen Glass, PhD, in a news release by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), which publishes mBio. “But those that still survived were the ones that were able to grow. If someone ate those apples fresh, they probably would not get sick. But because caramel-dipped apples are typically set out at room temperature for multiple days, maybe up to 2 weeks, it is enough time for the bacteria to grow.”The authors conclude that Listeria growth was likely accelerated by apple juice caused by the puncture to pool underneath the caramel, creating a favorable environment. Caramel and apples by themselves are not good substances for promoting bacterial growth. Possible solutions to the problem include disinfection of the apple, adding growth inhibitors, or employee temperature controls, they write.Oct 13 mBio study Oct 13 ASM news release High-dose flu vaccine might give older people more protectionThe high-dose version of the flu vaccine might offer nursing home residents slightly higher protection from hospitalization during the flu season, researchers reported late last week at IDWeek in San Diego.US and Canadian investigators studied data on more than 50,000 people 65 years old and older from 823 nursing homes in 38 states, according to an Oct 10 press release from University Hospitals Case Medical Center. The residents were given either the standard or high-dose flu shot from November 2013 to March 2014.Hospital admission rates were 20.9% for the standard-shot group and 19.7% for the high-dose recipients.”If given to all approximately 1.5 million nursing home residents, a [1-percentage-point] drop in hospitalizations would translate to thousands fewer being hospitalized,” said Stefan Gravenstein, MD, MPH, lead author of the study,  and director of the Center for Geriatrics and Palliative Care at University Hospitals Case Medical Center.Oct 10 University Hospitals Case Medical Center news releaselast_img read more

Robinson delighted as Ciftci ends long goal drought

first_img“I think all three of the boys up front can be better than they were, I’m sure they will be the first to say that, but they do nick points and win games for you.”The Jags edged ahead after Doolan’s lost his marker to convert a 53rd-minute free header.Motherwell gradually increased the pressure thereafter, however, and their pressure would eventually tell.Robinson said: “We didn’t deserve the three points because we didn’t mark properly from a free-kick. “We’re a young team, we do switch off and make mistakes at times and we will deal with that, and the person who made the mistake will recover from that.“I didn’t think there was a lot in the game, but I think we edged it on chances.”The draw saw Thistle clamber out of the relegation zone, as Hamilton succumbed to a 3-0 loss to Aberdeen.Jags boss Alan Archibald felt it was two points dropped, however. He said: “Our shape was reasonably good, I thought we were comfortable.“We dealt with a lot of balls into the box, it was just that one. “We should still deal with it, if we keep Ciftci away from goal.“He gets a half-chance and he takes it. We should see the game out.“We put a lot of effort into it. We will probably look back on it as a good point, it’s a hard place to come“I didn’t think there was a lot in the game, it was probably a horrible game to watch, I felt it was, but we more than matched them in that key area in the middle area of the pitch.” Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson was delighted for Nadir Ciftci after the striker ended a near two-year goal drought to earn his side a point against Partick Thistle. With the Steelmen trailing thanks to Kris Doolan’s header, Ciftci spun and drilled the ball into the corner in the 79th minute to bag his first goal for the club. The nomadic frontman had not scored since striking on loan for Turkish side Eskisehirspor in May 2016, despite playing for Celtic, Polish side Pogon Szczecin and Plymouth since then.Robinson hailed the forward for remaining unperturbed by the barren spell. He said: “I’m delighted for him.“Nadir can sometimes frustrate us because he tries things all the time, but he is the difference at times.“He has set two goals up and he has scored one now. “Curtis (Main) has scored as well so there is a promising partnership there.last_img read more

Perch Can Use Existing Devices To Make Any Home Smart

first_imgFresh out of the Samsung Accelerator startup program is Perch, an innovative app and back-end system for monitoring homes through existing hardware. It launches in open beta today as an Android app, but more integrations and iOS support are promised soon.See also: Smart Homes: How To Keep From Missing The Greatest Tech Opportunity Of Our TimeAt the heart of Perch is a simple home monitoring solution. Once installed on a spare Android (4.1+) phone or tablet, it lets users tap into a live stream from their property, with push alerts enabled if motion is detected. So far so Nest Cam, you might think. But Perch doesn’t actually have a physical camera—it uses the hardware you already have. It can also be run from webcam-enabled laptops and desktops as of today, with support for more devices (such as smart TVs) promised soon. You can in effect build up a home security network without buying any new devices at all.“The average family has six Internet-connected devices,” said Andrew Cohen, Perch’s CEO, in a press statement. “So we built an open solution that lets you get started with the hardware you already have.”There’s a commitment to a free and open approach here that’s bound to make the likes of Google and Apple sit up and take note: the startup eventually has ambitions to integrate Perch with smart lighting and power systems, effectively giving you access to all of your home automation needs through one app.The Perch Dashboard And FeaturesPerch video streams are accessed over the web.The software already includes two-way audio and advanced video technologies that Perch says reduces lag time to virtually nothing. It’s also possible to set up activity zones within particular rooms and manage cameras individually from a central web dashboard. That dashboard is reminiscent of Nest Aware, the cloud subscription service that Google charges $10 per month for. How Perch plans to fund all of this functionality once the open beta period is over remains to be seen, but right now it’s making today’s home security cameras look a little overpriced. To quote the app’s FAQ: “Perch is a free service. We haven’t finalized our plans for premium products just yet. We’re planning for it to include at least 7 days of historical video storage. We’re currently making that feature available to all beta-testers.”And it’s worth emphasizing again that Perch is in open beta at this stage—in our brief time playing around with the online portal and Android apps we noticed occasional stuttering and freezing, though the various interfaces themselves were clean and intuitive. It’s just about at the point where you’d expect a product in open beta to be, in other words. It’s an intriguing approach to the Internet of Things (IoT) phenomenon, which often involves setting up various Internet-connected devices, home appliances and sensors for automation and control. In this scenario, homeowners would make use of the devices they already own, introducing them to IoT in a straightforward way that (for now) costs nothing. What’s more, by pushing out software rather than successive generations of cameras, Perch can keep its updates small and frequent.Integrations and Developer Access Perch has plans for an API too.Out of the gate, Perch includes compatibility with SmartThings and Wink, and Cohen told us via email that the company is “planning to include several additional home automation systems in the near future.” There’s good news for developers interested in what Perch has to offer too.“While our immediate focus is on Perch’s home monitoring product, we designed the underlying technology with developers in mind, essentially as a scalable, Twilio-style platform for low-latency video,” Cohen told ReadWrite. “There are a host of applications that we’d love to see built on this platform, including live-streaming services and citizen-journalism apps, and more accurate motion-detection systems for security companies. Cohen also sees potential to improve the “Internet of Things ecosystem,” he added. Smart home products, like smart light bulbs and doorknobs, are attached to physical devices, like Z-Wave power switches or battery-powered magnetic sensors, which can detect the status of the item—like an open door or lights that are turned on. “[But] IoT still hasn’t come to grips with everyday objects,” he said. Perch aims to change that. Instead of peddling yet more hardware, the company uses vision and motion algorithms to detect the state of an object, whether it’s a sofa, a chair, a driveway, or a pool gate. Since it connects to IoT systems, it then allows users to take action. “Imagine having a secure API for your sofa, which broadcast its state,” said Cohen. “Is it empty? Is the dog sleeping on it? Are there ten people in front of the TV?” He promises that a Perch API (Application Programming Interface) is coming at some point, but for the time being, the company wants to get feedback from users as it developers the core product. In other words, turning connecting dumb furniture and fixtures is just the beginning. Extending their reach, so they can be truly smart, seems like the real perch the company’s aiming for. Images and video courtesy of Perch Related Posts Why Your Company’s Tech Transformation Starts W… david nield How AI is Learning to Play with Wordscenter_img Tags:#apps#Home Automation#Home Monitoring#Perch#smart home These Mistakes Can Derail a Legacy Software Con… Leveraging Big Data that Data Websites Should T…last_img read more

Justice Hill Chases Oklahoma State Freshman Rushing Records

first_imgJustice Hill is a star. He might be a superstar. Hill has 568 yards on 108 carries this season which is good for 5.3 yards per carry. In Big 12 games that number jumps to 5.6 yards per carry. His 568 rushing yards would have led last year’s team over the course of its 13-game season. Hill will almost certainly lead this year’s team in rushing and has a chance to set the all-time freshman record for yards in a season by a running back. Here’s where he ranks on that list currently.Mike Hamilton (961 yards)Jamaal Fobbs (928 yards)Thurman Thomas (843 yards)Andre Richardson (774 yards)Kendall Hunter (696 yards)Keith Toston (631 yards)Rafael Denson (569 yards)Justice Hill (565 yards)Hill is averaging about 20 carries a game. Let’s say he keeps on his 5.3 YPC pace (remember, he’s beating that right now in conference play). Over the course of six more games, he would end up with 1,201 yards.Whooooo boy.Oklahoma State’s last 1,200-yard rusher was Joe Randle who had 1,417 in 2012. He also had just over 1,200 in 2011. That was his sophomore and junior seasons though. What Hill is doing one year removed from playing for Booker T. Washington is remarkable.“I’ve been saying since he came in that he was the real deal and that he would have a really good season,” said sophomore receiver Jalen McCleskey who knows a few things about freshman success.“He’s done really well,” said Gundy. “Justice is still young. He was playing high school ball last year. He is exciting and can make guys miss. We have improved in that area, and that’s given us a chance to be successful up to this point. He’s growing up.”Yes he is. And he’s taunting record books. As my buddy Matt Amilian pointed out, if Hill stays all four years, nobody will have been better positioned than him to make a run at the all-time number of 4,847 set by Thurman Thomas from 194-1987. Mike Gundy Not Sure Rudolph, Washington Are Ready For NFL

first_imgThere is a lingering uncertainty sort of hovering over the last quarter of this college football season. With the announcement that Marcell Ateman will redshirt and be back next year for a senior season, the question standing between here and OSU potentially being a Big 12 title favorite is, “what if Rudolph and Washington leave?”I don’t think this will happen, and Mike Gundy addressed it on Monday at his press conference. What he said was really intriguing.“We haven’t had very many players here I felt like were ready to enter that level of football as juniors. That’s including Weeden and Blackmon and Russell Okung. Even though they were great players, I didn’t feel like they were ready for what that level can put out there or put in front of those guys. That’s my opinion.“Both of them played as freshmen so they’re still very young. Last night I watched a little bit of the end of that [NFL] game on TV. If you watched that game, that’s a completely different game. It’s not even the same. Those guys are all big, they’re all fast. The windows those quarterbacks have to throw in are so small.“I think both of those young men have great futures in this game, but in my opinion they need to grow and mature. But that’s a decision they have to make with themselves and their family.”Of course this is a reality that directly benefits Mike Gundy. Some people might be saying, “of course that’s what he’s going to say!” But Gundy also mentioned that he thought Brandon Pettigrew was ready. Gundy seems like a pretty straight shooter when it comes to kids’ futures. Maybe he’s not, but I think he’s being honest here. And I think that maybe unlike Dez and Pettigrew, both players could actually use a little more knowledge and a little more seasoning before entering the league. Their stock has been rising all year, though, and could crest as the season ends (which would be perfect). The allure of pro ball might be strong to resist. Though for the the sake of 2017 I sure hope it’s not.Mike Gundy thinks it’d be wise for both Mason Rudolph and James Washington to return to Stillwater for their senior seasons. #OKState pic.twitter.com/9pU3Teknu2— Cayden McFarland (@caydenmc) November 7, 2016 While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member.
