It was a rough and tumble battle Tuesday night between these two rivals.by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — In 2016-17, the Wellington-Rose Hill girls basketball rivalry was as big as any in the state. The two teams locked horns on four different occasions, splitting twice with Wellington winning the most important game of all – the regional championship.Tuesday night, you can add another classic game to the rivalry. Rose Hill would beat Wellington 58-55 that ended with Wellington’s Rylee Rusk taking it down court after two made Rocket free throws, and attempting a 3-pointer at the buzzer which fell short.At one point in the first half, Wellington was leading Rose Hill by 12 points.“That’s the thing about Rose Hill, they can bring 94 feet of pressure and not flinch,” said Eric Adams, Wellington head girls basketball coach.Wellington is now 9-8 and close out the regular season with three winnable games. The Crusaders travel to Mulvane Friday.Junior guard Taylor Meyer scored 18 points for Wellington including four 3-pointers. She is clearly becoming Wellington’s go-to player from the outside.“She is a great shooter and the other girls are beginning to realize that,” Adams said.Wellington opened the game with a 15-11 first quarter lead and would open up a 27-15 lead with 4:54 to play in the second as the Crusaders scored on four consecutive possessions.Rose Hill, though, came back and pulled within five 33-28 setting the tone for the second half.At the end of three, Rose Hill and Wellington were knotted at 44-44. Then the Rockets grabbed a 51-49 lead with 3:50 to play. Wellington pulled the lead within one.
